Classic Choquequirao Trek 5 Days

The 5 Day Classic Choquequirao Trek takes you off the beaten track and away from the crowds. This tour does not include a visit to Machu Picchu, instead, you’ll travel to another Inca Citadel that has been lost. This magnificent ancient site was buried for millennia in the mountain and was only recently discovered. Fewer than a dozen people may be seen on the Choquequirao Trek, making this a really unique and peaceful getaway.

We highly recommend the 5-day Choquequirao trek instead of the 4-day trek, because on the third day you will have the whole day to explore Choquequirao from end to end. Choquequirao is 3 times bigger than Machu Picchu and located in different parts, and moving to each part takes about 20 minutes, that’s why Choquequirao Trek in 5 days will be more convenient if you want to explore it calmly and deeply.

Departure & Return Location:

Hotel Cusco.

Departure Time:

Pick up from your hotel (4:00am – 4:30am).

Choquequirao Trek 5 Days highlights:

  • Trek to the hidden incan site that not many people go.
  • Like Machu Picchu, Choquequirao has structures that mark solar events such as solstices and equinoxes.
  • You will be practically alone with an archeological site very spectacular like Machu Picchu.
  • The few tourists who visited Choquequirao agree that it was worth it.
  • Learn a lot about the Inca culture.
  • Discover the second lost city of the Incas.
  • The Choquequirao ruins receive less than a dozen visitors a day.
  • Explore Choquequirao more deeply
  • Chance to see local flora and flora, including the Andean condor.
  • You will savor the Peruvian cuisine prepared by our master chef.

Please Note:
This tour will be operated normally in the dry season; however, we will change the itinerary to the classic route but still in 5 days in the rainy season. The campsite may vary due to the climate or health status of the trekkers.

Acclimatization:
We recommend you be in Cusco at least 2 days before your trek to be acclimatized to Cusco’s altitude so that you won’t have a problem during the tour.

About us:
Choquequirao Expeditions is a direct local tour operator in Cusco – Peru; we never share our tours with other companies as most of them do to minimize operating costs. We don’t work with intermediaries or have hidden prices; we have the best local guides and professionals. We guarantee that your travel expenditures will support the local economy, and improve the lives of local Peruvians, due to the simple reason we are a local business!

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco - Capuliyoc - Chiquiska - Playa Rosalinas.

Very early at 04:00 am we will pick you up from your hotel and then drive 4 hours in our minivan to Capuliyoc (2,800 m.s.n.m .). On the way, there are spectacular views of villages, valleys, and snowy mountains. Once we arrive, we will meet our staff (muleteers with their horses) who will pack all our equipment in the horses.

From here, we can enjoy the spectacular view of the Inca city of Choquequirao, the Apurímac canyon, and the impressive snowy mountains such as Padreyoc, Qoriwayrachina, Pumasillo, then we will walk downhill for 3 hours to Chiquisca (1,800 m.a.s.l.), for lunch. After lunch, we continue for 2 more hours downhill to our first camp at La Playa Rosalina’s.

Through our ascent, we will be able to observe several families that will offer us snacks and drinks to be able to continue our walk until we reach Marampata, where our chef will be waiting for us with our lunch. Here we will spend the second night and get ready to visit Choquequirao the next day.

Please Note: Because of new Choquequirao Park laws (it is no longer permitted to camp at the Choquequirao Park Camping site), that’s why we will have to spend the night at Marampata; after lunch, you will have a free afternoon to relax, and if you want a hot shower, the locals may offer you for $3.

We’ll have tea and dinner in the evening.

This day will be the long-awaited tour for all because we will visit and explore the ancient ruins of Choquequirao, the “sister city” of Machu Picchu, and learn more about its history and architecture! After breakfast, we will prepare for the most spectacular exploration of the magnificent archeological site of Choquequirao; there is so much to see. We will hike for about 1.5 hours to get there. Once we arrive, enjoy a private guided tour and explore the central plaza, ritual bath, administrative sector, granaries, etc.

Choquequirao is more extensive than Machu Picchu, although most are still hidden in the forest.

This Inca site is highly spread out because the Incas had to study mountain areas to build several buildings, terraces, and houses. Moreover, the most impressive parts of this Choquequirao Inca site are the temples, astronomical observatories, water channels, and inlaid stone llamas at the ruins of Choquequirao.

At noon, our cook and horseman will bring us lunch to the Choquequirao Park, after lunch in the park we will have free time to relax and then continue exploring the lower part of Choquequirao, we will visit the lower part of Choquequirao, where we will find the terraces of Pacchayoc (not all of them go there), whose name corresponds to the extraordinary waterfall that is located in front and the middle of a deep ravine, the crystalline waters of the snowy Padreyoc whispers a beautiful symphony, coming from nature that seemed to want to enchant us with its infinite murmurs.

After visiting Pacchayoc, we will return to the Marampata campsite, where we will have our tea and dinner.

Accommodation: Tent (4 season tent, 4 people made a tent for 2 people, allowing greater comfort).
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tea, and Dinner.
Hiking time: 4-5 hours approx.

In the morning, we will have breakfast as we enjoy the beauty of the area, and after leaving our campsite we will continue our walk as far as Chiquisqa, observing the scenery of the Apurimac canyon once more, with its abundant vegetation, including flowers and orchids. Today, we will walk for approximately six hours, from 3033 to 1950 meters above sea level.

Passing small communities along the way, we will arrive at La Playa, where we will have lunch before continuing our ascent to Chiquisqa. Here we will spend the night, enjoying a night under the stars after our dinner.

After our last breakfast, we get ready to return to Cusco. We embark on a 3 hour hike until we arrive at the end of our trek. In the distance, we soak in the last views of Choquequirao, Capuliyoc Pass. When we get to the top, we will have private transport waiting for us to take us to the archaeological site of Saywite. Here, we tour this fascinating site and get to see water fountains and an Inca monolith.

FAQs

Can I be picked up from the Sacred Valley?
Yes, let us know in advance to organize your pick-up time (there is an extra cost).

Is there a cable car in Choquequirao?
The project to make a cable car that connected the town of Cachora to Marampata was not completed due to the frequent presence of landslides, and this plan was gradually lost.

What is Choquequirao?
Choquequirao is named after Quechua Chuqi K’iraw, the cradle of gold. Located just over 3,000 meters high, they are Inca terraces and buildings, very similar to the citadel of Machu Picchu in terms of its architecture. Some call it the “Sacred Sister of Machu Picchu” or “Second Machu Picchu.” The site is not as large as Machu Picchu, but it is much less crowded by travelers; since it can only be accessed on foot, with a tour operator, it is the longest and most complete road in Peru.
