About us:
Choquequirao Expeditions is a direct local tour operator in Cusco – Peru; we never share our tours with other companies as most of them do to minimize operating costs. We don’t work with intermediaries or have hidden prices; we have the best local guides and professionals. We guarantee that your travel expenditures will support the local economy, and improve the lives of local Peruvians, due to the simple reason we are a local business!
At 7:00 am, we will pick up our passengers from their hotel in Cusco, and we will go to the town of Maras to meet our Rider and the Horses. There will be a short chat before we mount our horses and begin our journey. First, we will pass through the salt mines of Maras, which are on the slopes of Mount Qaqawiñay, where thousands of small carved stone pools are filled with a flow of saltwater diverted from the interior of Qaqawiñay as they have been since the time of the Incas.
This artisanal salt extraction process creates a visually striking site of varied hues and textures due to sunlight bouncing off different salt levels. The people of Maras jointly manage the site. During our journey along the valley’s dirt road, we will enjoy impressive landscapes surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Andes Mountains. We will be passing through small towns and fields of crops that serve as subsistence for the native inhabitants. We will go to the Archaeological Complex of Moray (3200 masl), an agricultural laboratory in which they experimented with seeds and crop development. Each concentric circular terrace replicates a different microclimate.
After visiting Moray, we will drive to the train station of Ollantaytambo, and we will take the train to Aguas Calientes, where we will accommodate you in a hotel.
This second day we get up very early to have breakfast and continue our adventure. We will take the first bus that leaves at 6:00 a.m., which will take us to Machu Picchu, where we can appreciate its beautiful sunrise.
After a short rest and time to relax, we begin with the long-awaited guided tour of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary, which lasts approximately two and a half hours. We will visit the most important places such as the Main Square, the Circular Tower, the Solar Clock, the Royal Rooms, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Royal Cemeteries and much more. After the guided tour, you will have free time to continue exploring one of the seven wonders of the modern world and take the best photos.
At the appropriate time, you should take the bus that will take you back down to Aguas Calientes, where you will have time to have a leisurely lunch at the restaurant of your choice, then you can visit the thermal baths or visit the local market or museum.
Finally, at 6:30 p.m., we will take the return train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo. Then we will connect with the bus trip from Ollantaytambo to the city of Cusco, where we will be arriving around 10:30 p.m., ending our 2-day horseback riding tour.
We also offer a special service only for you or your group, you have the power to choose the size of your group and the date of departure, we will never add other people since it will be organized only for you.
