Overview

5-Day Choquequirao Trek via Huanipaca Route Overview

Venture into the heart of the Andes on a thrilling five-day trek to Choquequirao, traversing the less traveled Huanipaca route. This expedition is a fusion of adventure and ancient history, a journey that takes you away from the beaten paths and into a world where nature’s grandeur meets the remnants of a glorious past. Each day is a revelation, unfolding the diverse landscapes of Peru – from the depths of the Apurimac Canyon’s rugged cliffs to the serene highlands, draped in greenery and solitude. For those seeking a path less trodden, this trek is a gateway to unexplored corners of the Incan empire, offering an intimate glimpse into the mysteries of a lost civilization.

Choquequirao, the highlight of this journey, stands as a silent testament to Incan ingenuity, a site shrouded in both beauty and mystery. Less frequented than its famous counterpart Machu Picchu, Choquequirao offers a unique chance to explore Incan history in a setting of tranquility and majestic isolation. The trek is more than a physical challenge; it’s a journey of discovery, where each step deepens your connection with the ancient Inca spirit. As you camp under the clear night skies, the journey transcends into a personal quest, blending adventure with a sense of inner peace and a newfound appreciation for the rich tapestry of history and nature that defines the Andean landscape.

Please Note:

During the dry season (May – October), our 5-Day Choquequirao Trek follows its main path. However, due to safety concerns like landslides in the rainy season, we switch to a safer, classic route. Regardless of the season, you’ll always enjoy a complete 5-day experience.

Important Notice:

In compliance with the new regulations established in Choquequirao, camping on the Choquequirao terraces has been prohibited since 2022. We are committed to respecting these rules to preserve the site’s heritage. While some operators may still advertise camping on the terraces, be advised that this goes against the official guidelines. To ensure an authentic and respectful experience, we have chosen Marampata, a picturesque location close to Choquequirao, as our official camping site. We strive to provide you with a memorable experience while upholding the integrity of this magnificent site.

Fuel your morning with breakfast before embarking on the much-anticipated exploration of Choquequirao. This enigmatic Inca site, perched high in the Andes, is a tapestry of history and culture. As you walk through its plazas and terraces, our guides will unfold the stories and theories that shroud this ancient citadel.

The site’s highlight is its terraces adorned with white stone llamas, a testament to the Inca’s mastery in art and agriculture. Enjoy a picnic lunch amidst these ruins, allowing the mystique of Choquequirao to sink in. The afternoon’s return to Marampata is a journey back in time, as the setting sun casts a golden hue over the stone structures.

The day begins with a descent back towards the Apurimac River, offering a different perspective of the canyon’s grandeur. The path is a blend of natural beauty and historical relevance, as you traverse areas seldom visited by the outside world. Reaching the river’s edge, the landscape transforms, revealing the river’s power and grace.

The ascent to Hacienda de San Ignacio is a picturesque journey, unveiling panoramic views and the diverse ecology of the region. Once at the hacienda, savor a well-deserved lunch. The afternoon’s hike to the Waterfall of San Ignacio is a refreshing experience, a hidden gem in the midst of the Andes. As night falls, our “happy hour” and dinner at the campsite provide a perfect end to an adventurous day.

Upon reaching Villa de Loros, transition to our transport for a visit to the Saywite archeological site. Here, the Inca’s genius is showcased through a rock monolith carved with intricate designs, symbolizing their deep connection to the earth.
